The AR-15
is successor
to the heavier
caliber AR-10
rifle designed
by Eugene
Stoner while
he worked
for Armalite.
The AR-15
was built
at the request
of the U.S
Army, who
liked the
AR-10 design
but wanted
the rifle
chambered
to shoot the
.223 Remington
cartridge
(5.56mm).
Sometime
in 1959 for
reasons unknown
Armalite chose
to sell the
patent and
brand rights
for the AR-15
to Colt. Shortly
thereafter
The U.S. Military
adopted the
AR-15 platform
and changed
its designation
to the M16.
Colt kept
the AR-15
designation
for rifles
sold to the
civilian market.
The civilian
rifles aside
from being
semi-auto
only were
identical.
Another item
of note is
that the “AR”
label actually
stands for
“Armalite
Rifle”
instead of
the common
misconception
that it stood
for “assault
rifle”.
The original
AR-15 rifle
was very lightweight,
weighing less
than 6 pounds
with empty
magazine,
though later
heavy-barrel
versions of
the civilian
AR-15 can
weigh upwards
of 8.5 lbs.
While Colt
owned the
patent for
the AR-15,
during the
war, several
other companies
were granted
licenses to
produce the
rifles for
sale to the
military to
meet demand.
Today there
are dozens
of companies
manufacturing
their own
versions of
the AR-15
rifle.
Due to its
reliability
and the extreme
versatility
of the AR-15
platform.
The AR-15
has become
the favorite
of civilian
shooters,
hunters, law
enforcement
personnel
and even competition
shooters.
In the last
few years
a whole new
industry has
sprung up
to support
the popularity
of the AR-15.
Thanks to
all the new
products on
the market
the AR-15
has without
a doubt become
the most versatile
and modifiable
rifle platform
in the world.

Dear
AR-15
Enthusiast,
Have
you
ever
daydreamed
of
owning
that
perfect
AR-15
rifle…You
know,
the
one
that
meets
all
of
your
needs
and
is
built
exactly
to
your
specifications?
Are
you
tired
of
canvassing
gun
shows
and
searching
dealers
and
only
finding
the
same
boring
rifles
that
everybody
else
already
has?
Would
you
like
to
save
hundreds
of
dollars
off
the
retail
cost
of
AR-15’s
AND
get
exactly
what
you
want
on
the
rifle?
If
this
sounds
like
you,
read
on...
The
AR-15
pictured
above
is
the
newest
addition
to
my
collection.
It
is
a
16”
carbine
that
has
been
converted
to
fire
9mm
ammunition.
The
retail
price
tag
on
the
rifle
is
$1,679.98.
A
nice
rifle,
but
nothing
to
over
the
top
right?
But
here’s
the
kicker...it
only
cost
me
$825
(not
including
the
optics)
How?
You
may
ask…
...The
answer,
because
I
built
it
myself!
That’s
right.
By
shopping
around
a
bit
and
buying
all
the
pieces
individually
and
then
assembling
the
rifle
myself
I
was
able
to
save
over
$850
off
the
retail
price.
Not
only
did
I
save
$850,
but
I
also
got
to
pick
the
exact
components
I
wanted
as
well
as
learning
invaluable
information
about
how
my
rifle
worked.
With
retail
prices
of
AR-15’s
at
all
time
highs
and
with
the
accessory
market
flooded
with
high
quality
upgrades
and
add-ons
there
has
never
been
a
better
time
to
learn
how
to
build
your
own
AR-15
rifle.
Let’s
look
at
some
of
the
benefits
of
building
your
own
AR-15
rifle:
- Save
money
by
buying
parts
individually
and
assembling
them
yourself.
- Avoid
paying
tax
on
the
rifle
from
a
dealer.
- Avoid
paying
tax
on
parts
bought
online
or
at
gun
shows.
- Build
your
rifle
using
only
the
components
and
accessories
YOU
want.
- Invaluable
knowledge
of
how
the
AR-15
works.
- Ability
to
replace
parts
and
repair
rifle
if
needed.
- Pride
of
ownership
and
the
right
to
say
"I
built
it
myself".
And
best
of
all
building
an
AR-15
is
not
nearly
as
difficult
or
as
technical
as
you
might
think.
In
fact...
If
you
can
use
a
hammer
and
tighten
a
screw,
then
you
can
easily
assemble
your
own
AR-15
rifle
in
a
matter
of
hours.
See
below
how
you
can
build
your
own
AR-15
rifle...

| Your guide
is awesome!
I have owned
an AR15 for
years but never
built one on
my own. Using
the pictures
in your guide
I was able to
build my own
SBR AR15 in
two hours. My
next step is
to paint it
all up in digital
camo! |
| |
Joe
Bennet, LA |
| |
| The pictures
in your book
were a great
help, much easier
than plain written
instructions.
I was able to
match your pictures
with exactly
what I was doing
in each step
of the build
and complete
my new AR with
no mistakes
or damage to
the rifles finish. |

build my first
AR, I have caught
the Black Rifle

Thanks for the

| Your guide
really helped
me learn the
ins and outs
of my rifle.
I especially
appreciated
the itemized
parts diagrams
you included.
I now feel that
I know my AR15
as intimately
as I possibly
can. |
| |
Ronald
Moeberg, CA |

| I bought your
book initially
so I could learn
to build my
own rifle, but
I found it so
easy to follow
and duplicate
that I gave
it to my teenage
sons and let
them each build
their own AR-15.
This has not
only brought
us closer, but
now my sons
love to go out
and shoot and
show off the
rifles they
“built
themselves”. |
| |
Dave
Kahle, CO |

| You should
call your guide
"AR-15
Building for
Dummies".
Because anybody
can follow your
instructions
and build their
own AR-15 rifle.
What a great
shooting resource! |

Austin
Powning, TX |

| You were right.
I build the
rifle of my
dreams for less
than the cost
of a similar
rifle from a
dealer. Plus
building it
myself was suck
a kick, I had
no idea I’d
enjoy it this
much. I can’t
wait to build
another one. |
